Our History & Mission

Our mission is to reduce substance abuse in youth and to create community culture supporting healthy choices and responsible behaviors in youth and adults.

The San Juan Island Prevention Coalition started in 2003 after a 5 year plan was submitted as part of the requirements set in the federal Drug Free Communities (DFC) grant process. We have applied for another 5 year cycle and completed that. We are now funded through State funds. Currently, SJIPC is a Community Prevention and Wellness Initiative supported community coalition funded by the Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery (DBHR) with the WA Department of Social Health Services.  As budget cuts continue, we always welcome the support of private donors and organizations to help support more youth in youth leadership training opportunities and project development and implementation.

Our Coalition has since been a mentoring grantee to the Lopez Island Prevention Coalition! We partner with our “sister coalition” on many occasions, including youth leadership training. It’s very exciting to see the Island youth get together and think globally. Together, we are stronger!

Learning to support one another takes practice.
Offering leadership & team building activities promotes community.
