School Safety Summit “Sewing a Community Quilt”

On April 26 the NWESD 189 and Cascadian Center at Camp Brotherhood are co-sponsoring, to bring community and schools together to talk about how we are all addressing the notion of safe and nurturing schools.

This One-Day Summit to to Discuss Multi-tiered Systems of Support to Ensure Safe and Nurturing Environments for Young People (Here is the draft agenda for the day).

Guiding Question: What are you doing in your school and community to promote safe AND nurturing environments for young people? 

8:00 – 8:30 Registration and Coffee, etc.

8:30 – 8:45 Welcome, Introductions, Etc.

8:45 – 9:45 Opening Keynote Addresses (Creating Context – School Safety and a Multi-tiered System of Support)

9:45 – 11:00 Facilitated Table Talk – 10 tables x 10 people x 4 Questions (Facilitator, Recorder)

1. What does school/community safety mean to your organization? 

2. What strategies/initiatives do you employ to create safe and nurturing environments for young people? 

    1. How does your school and community collaborate to foster safe and nurturing environments for young people?
    2. How does this keep your children safe and nurtured? 

10:30 Refreshments Available

11:00 – 12:30 Brief (6-8 Minutes) Table Talk Report-outs

12:30 – 1:15 Lunch (speaker, movie, or table conversation starters based on the table talk topics)

1:30 – 3:00 Panel Presentation ( highlighting key regionally available resource providers who would address the 4 Questions – e.g. OSPI, NWESD 189, 1/10 of 1% mental health programs, community mental health, YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, Law enforcement, DSHS, Rachel’s Challenge, Rotary, Lions, Parks and Rec, Prevention Coalitions, etc)

3:00 – 3:15 Break/Refreshments

3:15 – 4:00 Strategize Next Steps: What do we need to know? Who is missing from the discussion? Where do we go from here?

4:00 – 4:30 Closure/Feedback/Key Questions or Ideas for Future Summits or action?

4:30 Adjourn

Follow-up: Copies of  notes/forms from the 10 table talks, a list of regional resources, a contact list of all participants, other documents.
