Rock Solid Wins National Award!

Congratulations to Rock Solid prevention youth for their receipt of a national award for their Red Ribbon Week vaping prevention message posted on the Friday Harbor High School chemistry door.  See below for the official announcement and a picture of their entry.  They received one of ten Judges picks – the award for Educational entry.

What a great start to implementing their planned activities for the school year.  They worked on their plan at the CADCA Youth Leadership training in July.  (Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America)

They also successfully have been able to get the quitline info on the back of all student ID Cards.  They are now in the process of implementing their third iteration of suicide prevention messaging to their peers (suicide hotline info is also on the back of ID’s).

Great work Rock Solid!

Here’s the official announcement:

Congratulations to the 2019 National Red Ribbon Photo Contest Winners

National Family Partnership wishes to thank everyone across the country who participated in the 9th Annual National Red Ribbon Photo Contest Co-Sponsored by the DEA.  Held in conjunction with National Red Ribbon Week, the contest is an opportunity to engage families and communities nationwide in our efforts to keep Americans informed about the benefits of staying drug-free through the use of photography.

Red Ribbon Week Contest

Periodic Message

The Rock Solid Youth Prevention Team competed in the Red Ribbon Contest for their school.

They are trying to win $1000 for Friday Harbor High School, so they can continue to build on their prevention efforts and support a healthier school community for their peers.

Rock Solid cleverly spelled out, “Escape the Vape, Be Nicotine & THC-Free”, using chemical symbols from the periodic table of elements. The theme is Send a Message. Stay Drug-Free. Periodically, you just have to send a message!

These chemistry students and prevention advocates hope this clever use of theme will help them appeal to the judges. Results will be announced on December 2, but they are already winners for stepping up to share this message on their high school Chemistry Room door!

National Family Partnership’s work includes:

  • AWARENESS – NFP provides drug awareness by sponsoring the annual National Red Ribbon Campaign™. Since its beginning in 1985, the Red Ribbon has touched the lives of millions of people around the world. In response to the murder of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena, angered parents and youth in communities across the country began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the killing and destruction cause by drugs in America. In 1988, NFP sponsored the first National Red Ribbon Celebration. Today, the Red Ribbon serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities.
  • ADVOCACY – NFP is active in bringing the concerns and agenda of America’s parents and families to policymakers on a local, state, and national level. Joining NFP enables parents and coalitions to have direct access to our nation’s leaders and decision-makers.
  • RESOURCES – Our organization acts as a national clearinghouse of prevention literature. NFP has developed a series of prevention brochures to help educate our Partners with all the latest information on our Universal Campaigns such as Red Ribbon Campaign, Red Ribbon Certified Schools, Lock Your Meds, and Safe Homes / Safe Parties.

Rock Solid Prevention Project supports Peers with Student Ids Printed with Valuable Resources on Back.

We are excited to share our Rock Solid Youth Team of the San Juan Island Prevention Coalition (SJIPC) and our school photographer; Mark Gardner printed valuable resources on the back of all Middle and High student ids. We are serving our Friday Harbor Middle School (FHMS) and Friday Harbor High School (FHHS) students, nearly 475! An idea in the making for a few years finally becomes a reality with the collaboration of community members.

Rock Solid wanted to put essential resources in the palm of their peers, and the idea to print these resources on the back of every FHMS and FHHS school student ID was born! With the permission of their Principal, Rock Solid started to explore ways to make this happen. Thankfully, one of our SJIPC Board members, Court Bell, a former Principal himself, was supportive of the idea and offered to help fund such a venture. Mark Gardner found a photo lab that was able to print both sides of the student ids instead of just the usual one side. This ability eliminated the need to buy an expensive printer for the project and thankfully reduced the cost, as well.

Mark Gardner also stepped up to absorb the costs of these extra printing fees, as he, too, sees the benefit of our youth having these resources for Suicide Prevention and Escape the Vape hotlines and chat-lines readily available for our students. Rock Solid acknowledges Court Bell because he was the first one willing to financially support this idea when Rock Solid shared it at a Board of Trustees meeting last summer, and it got the wheels in motion.

Rock Solid has learned, it only takes one person to believe in your idea to help build momentum. We are also grateful to our school photographer, Mark Gardner, for his time, dedication to this project, and financial support to help us achieve this goal. We couldn’t have done this without Mark’s full support! So, when you see Mark, smile and say thank you. Mark has been our school district’s photographer for many years and has a photo studio in Anancortes. photographybymarkgardner.com
